Will Crewdson maintained his recent run of fine form to claim a brace of top-ten finishes this past weekend (12 October) as the Junior Saloon Car Championship staged its penultimate event of the season at Oulton Park.
More than a month on from when he was last in action, the Orex Competition driver underlined his credentials as one to watch in the single-make championship as he matched his best finish of the year at the picturesque Cheshire circuit. Approaching the end of what has been a superlative first full season of car racing, the 17-year-old wasted no time in hitting the ground running during Friday’s practice sessions as he worked to get his car in the sweet spot for Saturday’s two races. Qualifying around the 2.692-mile track would prove to be an ultra-competitive affair as Crewdson - who is this year’s Scholarship winner and the recipient of a fully-funded season in the championship - powered his way onto the fifth row of the grid.
Starting tenth for the opening encounter, the Valued Accountancy and Hadrian’s Vehicle Services-backed teenager found himself in an almighty scrap inside the points as he tussled with a number of drivers - all who were looking to move themselves forward. In the end, Crewdson would take the chequered flag where he started and with it secured his second successive top-ten finish on the bounce, which underlined the progress he has made in not only recent rounds, but over the course of the season as a whole. Lining up in 11th for race two, Crewdson showcased his overtaking prowess in a pulsating six-lap contest as pulled off a number of eye-catching moves to jump up to ninth; and had there been one more lap that very well could have been a career-best finish of eighth.
“I’m over the moon with how the day panned out,” said Crewdson. “Since Anglesey I’ve been working really to ensure I’m as prepared as can be and I think that showed because we’ve come away with two more top-ten finishes. “The Orex Competition team gave me a great car and being able to draw on the expertise of Bradley Philpot was invaluable. I had some great battles out there and felt like I had the pace to push on even further. “To be going into the final round of the season at Brands Hatch with the recent run of results we’ve had is a massive confidence boost for me. I can’t wait to get there now and see if we can sign off the season in real style!” The Junior Saloon Car Championship will close out its 2024 season at Brands Hatch on the 2-3 November.
Will Crewdson is setting his sights on more top results in the Junior Saloon Car Championship this weekend (7-8 September) as the popular one-make series heads to Anglesey Circuit for Rounds 17, 18 & 19 of the 2024 season.
The upcoming trip to the picturesque track in North Wales marks the latest event of what has proven to be a whirlwind campaign for the Orex Competition driver that originally began at the start of the year.
Having always had a passion for motor racing, the 17-year-old entered the coveted JSCC Scholarship, which aims to give one aspiring racer the life-changing prize of a fully-funded season in one of the most competitive junior categories in the country.
Impressing an esteemed judging panel across a variety of key areas, Will was declared the winner and has since been making his mark as he builds towards what he hopes will be a fledgling career behind the wheel.
After getting to grips with both the car and the series in the early part of the season, Will - who is backed by Valued Accountancy and Hadrian’s Vehicle Services - has made huge strides in recent rounds to become a regular fixture in the points-paying positions.
Claiming a season-best finish of tenth place at Castle Combe, the North East born teenager is now focused on progressing further up the order; especially as Anglesey marks the start of the championship run-in - with events at Oulton Park and Brands Hatch left to run afterwards.
“I’m really looking forward to heading to Anglesey this weekend,” said Will. “It looks like another really fun track to drive that has a great mix of corners - all of which is going to help me learn and progress that bit further.
“Since winning the Scholarship at the start of the year it’s been somewhat of an assault on the senses to learn everything - that goes from the car and the series to everyone in the team and understanding what is required away from the track.
“I feel like I’m up to speed on all of that now and I’m heading into the weekend fully focused on not only delivering some good results but to also enjoy myself. Tenth at Castle Combe was great however I’m hungry for more and want to be challenging higher up before the year is out.
“Staying out of trouble and bringing the car home is the first goal but if I can mix it up at the front at all I’ll be over the moon. Qualifying is going to be crucial so we need to nail a lap and that can hopefully set us up for three strong races.”
Qualifying at Anglesey commences on Saturday at 12:30 with race one following later that afternoon at 15:50. Races two and three will then follow on Sunday at 10:05 and 14:10.
